Ep 2 – From Berkeley to Baltimore: The Future of Safety on the EDGE

Corrie and Malcolm reflect on the Safety on the Edge 2025 Conference in Berkeley, calling it one of the most inspiring events they’ve experienced.

They highlight powerful keynote moments – particularly Kim Greene’s heartfelt talk, which demonstrated authentic leadership in safety – and the unique panel featuring leaders of NSC, ASSP, and AIHA together for the first time.

Both note the value of breaking silos, fostering open discussions, and creating networking opportunities that set the conference apart.

They also celebrate the Lifetime Achievement Awards, which honored pioneers like James Reason, Diane Vaughan, David Woods, and Karlene Roberts, emphasizing the importance of recognizing both academics and practitioners who have shaped safety thinking. The emotional responses underscored the depth of impact these figures have had on the profession.

Looking ahead, they preview Safety on the Edge 2026 in Baltimore, co-hosted with NSC’s Spring Conference. Key features will include:

  • Continuation of lifetime and company/site awards, with audience voting.
  • A stronger speaker lineup focused on thought leaders rather than consultants promoting themselves.
  • New exclusive workshops (limited to 40 people) with sessions led by Todd Conklin & Corrie, Kathy Seabrook & Andrea Hernandez, Jean-Christophe Le Coze & James Pomeroy, plus one to be announced
  • A renewed focus on integration of academia and practice, breaking silos, and strengthening leadership strategies.

They also announce the 2026 Lifetime Award winners:

  • Academics: Amy Edmondson (for work on psychological safety) and Karl Weick (high reliability organizations).
  • Practitioners: Tom Krause (behavioral safety) and Todd Conklin (HOP)

Throughout, Corrie and Malcolm stress that Safety on the Edge is not about commercial gain, it’s about values, giving back to the profession, fostering innovation, and ultimately protecting lives.
